Gili Matra Targeted to Become a Waste-Free Marine Area by 2029

The North Lombok Regency Government (KLU), together with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), is targeting the areas of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air (Gili Matra) to become waste-free marine zones. This is in line with the central government’s target of making Indonesia’s seas free from waste by 2029.

The KKP has a 2029 waste-free ocean program, which includes the management of waste originating from river mouths, small islands, coastal areas, ports, and marine activities. This is because the three Gili Islands are national conservation and tourism areas. The initial step taken is data mapping so that interventions and solutions can be implemented in a targeted manner.

As a form of concrete support, the KKP will provide incinerator equipment that has passed feasibility tests. With this equipment, waste in Gili Matra can be managed better and extreme accumulation will no longer occur.

Through this program, Gili Matra will be directed to become a zero-waste area with two main focuses: handling the accumulated old waste and managing the new waste that continues to be generated. Gili Matra will become an example that tourism and conservation can go hand in hand without neglecting environmental responsibility.
