Strengthening Gili Meno’s Coral Reefs and the Future of Biorock Blue Energy

Gili Meno, an island renowned for its serenity and crystal-clear waters, is now setting a new global standard in marine conservation. Behind the charm of this “Turtle Island” lies a revolutionary step: The strengthening of the marine ecosystem through Biorock technology powered by Blue Energy.

What is Biorock Strengthening?
Based on a scientific study published in the Pendas Journal (University of Pasundan), Biorock—or Mineral Accretion Technology—operates through a unique electrolytic process. Steel structures on the seabed are supplied with a low-voltage direct current (DC) that is completely safe for marine life.

This electrolysis process draws calcium carbonate minerals from the seawater to coat the structure, creating a solid limestone substrate. In Gili Meno, this technology provides a “super-strength” boost to the corals:

ccelerated Growth: Corals on Biorock structures are proven to grow 2 to 8 times faster than under natural conditions.

  • Accelerated Growth: Corals on Biorock structures are proven to grow 2 to 8 times faster than under natural conditions.
  • High Vitality: These corals become significantly more resilient to extreme seawater temperature changes, ensuring the underwater ecosystem remains vibrant and alive.

biorocs gili meno

Gili Meno: A Natural Fortress with Blue Energy
A key highlight of the strengthening efforts in Gili Meno is Biorock’s function as a natural coastal protector. Instead of using rigid concrete breakwaters, the open-framework Biorock structures effectively dissipate wave energy. This allows sand to settle naturally along the shoreline, reinforcing Gili Meno’s coastline against erosion without compromising the beach’s aesthetic beauty.

The future of this reinforcement is now shifting toward Blue Energy. By harnessing the powerful currents of the Gili straits through marine turbines, the electricity for the Biorock process is generated independently and renewably. This creates a clean energy cycle: the ocean providing its own energy to strengthen itself.

A Haven for Iconic Marine Life
Strengthening coral reefs through Biorock directly impacts Gili Meno’s biodiversity. The lush and dense structures provide an ideal sanctuary for juvenile fish and lobsters, while supporting the food supply for the sea turtle population that serves as Meno’s primary tourism icon.

Sustainable Tourism Synergy
This innovative step proves that Gili Meno is not just an ordinary tourist destination, but a hub for Sustainable Tourism. Collaboration between the local community, organizations like Gili Eco Trust, and academic research support ensures that the quality of Meno’s marine environment continues to improve year after year.

Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary: A Bastion of Marine Conservation and Eco-Tourism in Lombok

GILI MENO, INDONESIA — Beyond the serene turquoise waters and the pristine white sands of the Gili Islands lies a silent, decades-long crusade to save one of the ocean’s most iconic species. Since its inception in 1995, the Turtle Sanctuary Gili Meno has served as a critical stronghold for thousands of endangered sea turtle hatchlings, battling the dual threats of human encroachment and ecosystem degradation.

Sea Turtle Protection Gili Islands

A Legacy of Conservation
Founded by the visionary Abdul Hanan (locally known as Pak Bolong) and now spearheaded by his son, Roly, the sanctuary was born out of a dire necessity. “Our primary mission is to shield the turtle population from tangible threats such as illegal poaching, marine pollution, and habitat loss,” Roly stated during a recent briefing.

Gili Meno is a strategic nesting site for three distinct species: the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), and the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata).

From Simple Pools to Integrated Conservation
The biological reality for sea turtles is harsh; in the wild, a hatchling’s survival rate is estimated at less than 1%. This grim statistic makes human intervention not just beneficial, but essential for the species’ survival.

What began as a modest volunteer initiative with simple pools has evolved into an integrated marine conservation center. The facility now features:

  • Modern Hatchling Pools: Where turtles are monitored until they reach a resilient age (6–8 months).
  • Educational Zones: Designed to bridge the gap between tourism and environmental literacy.
  • Systematic Nesting Protocols: Where eggs are safely relocated from natural beach nests to protected incubation areas for a 45–60 day period.

The Power of Community and Global Collaboration
The sanctuary’s success is a testament to the synergy between local communities, NGOs, and the BKKPN Kupang (Gili Matra Working Area). This collaborative framework ensures that conservation isn’t just a localized effort but a collective responsibility involving tourists and volunteers.

“Community involvement is the cornerstone of our success,” Roly emphasized. “They don’t just guard the nests; they educate the travelers who visit our shores.”

A Call to Action for Travelers
For the global traveler, the sanctuary offers a profound “edu-tourism” experience. Ceremonial hatchling releases are frequently held, allowing visitors to witness the poignant moment these ancient mariners return to the sea.

By visiting Gili Meno, travelers are encouraged to participate in a “plastic-free” lifestyle, as marine debris remains the leading cause of mortality for sea turtles globally.

The Most Memorable Tourist Attractions in North Lombok

North Lombok Regency has a wealth of natural beauty with great potential as tourist destinations. The attractions are very diverse, ranging from waterfalls and traditional villages to historical sites and stunning beaches. If you are planning a vacation to Lombok Island, here are some of the most memorable tourist attractions in North Lombok that you should visit.

1. The Three Gilis That Steal Your Heart
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Lombok is the Three Gilis, consisting of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air. These three small islands are located close to each other, making them perfect for an island-hopping experience.

The waters around the Gilis are famous for being crystal clear, with beautiful coral reefs beneath the surface. This is why the area is considered one of the best places for snorkeling and diving in Lombok. Another unique feature of the islands is the absence of motorized vehicles. As a result, the atmosphere on the islands feels peaceful, clean, and free from pollution. Instead, visitors usually get around by bicycle or by using a traditional horse-drawn carriage called a cidomo. On land, travelers can enjoy lively nightlife, restaurants, and beachside cafes. Meanwhile, the sea offers breathtaking underwater scenery for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Location: North Lombok Regency

2. Mount Rinjani, One of the Most Beautiful Volcanoes in Indonesia
A trip to North Lombok would not be complete without visiting Mount Rinjani. Administratively, this mountain lies within three regions: North Lombok, East Lombok, and Central Lombok. Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, standing at 3,726 meters above sea level.

Besides being a favorite destination for hikers, Mount Rinjani is also known for its spectacular natural scenery. Along the trekking routes, hikers will pass through tropical forests, savanna landscapes, and the famous Segara Anak Lake. Because of its breathtaking views, Mount Rinjani is often considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Indonesia.

Location: North Lombok Regency

3. Sendang Gile Waterfall, A Refreshing Natural Wonder
The beauty of Mount Rinjani is not only visible from its summit. The Mount Rinjani National Park area is home to many stunning natural attractions, one of which is Sendang Gile Waterfall.

This waterfall is located at an altitude of about 600 meters above sea level, with a height of approximately 31 meters. It is situated in Senaru Village, which is also one of the main gateways for Mount Rinjani trekking. To reach the waterfall, visitors must walk down around 315 steps. Although the journey can be tiring, it is well worth the effort once you arrive at the waterfall.

The cool mist and fresh water provide a refreshing experience after the walk. According to local legend, anyone who washes their face with the water from Sendang Gile Waterfall is believed to stay youthful.

Location: Senaru Village, Bayan District, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.

Australian Media Highlights Gili Meno as Indonesia’s Best-Preserved Hidden Gem

A recent feature by the prominent Australian outlet, The West Australian, has brought significant international attention to Indonesia’s tourism landscape. In an article published in late December 2025, journalist Dave Smith praised Gili Meno as a rare example of a destination that has successfully maintained its natural purity amidst the rapid growth of global tourism.

International Recognition for Gili Meno’s Sustainability
The feature highlights Gili Meno as the standout island within the Gili archipelago for its consistency in ecological preservation. Key strengths noted by The West Australian include:

  • Pristine Ecosystems: Healthy coral reefs and clean white-sand beaches remain the primary draw for international travelers seeking an authentic experience.
  • Community-Led Waste Management: The success of local communities in managing waste through early-childhood environmental education and active contribution from local businesses.
  • Sustainable Tourism: Gili Meno is recognized for avoiding the pitfalls of overdevelopment, offering a tranquil and authentic retreat.

A Gentle Note on Geographical Precision
Such positive exposure from a reputable international publisher like The West Australian is a point of pride for Indonesian tourism. However, there is one important aspect to clarify with the utmost respect for the sake of accurate information for the global public.

In the article, Gili Meno is frequently associated as a part of “Bali’s Last Paradise.” While we deeply appreciate Bali’s iconic status as the primary gateway to Indonesian tourism—often used by international journalists as a familiar reference point for readers—it is essential to maintain geographical accuracy.

For the record, both administratively and territorially:
“Gili Meno is a part of the North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province.”

Clarifying this identity is not merely a matter of diction; it is a way to honor the local identity of Lombok and the dedicated efforts of its people in preserving Gili Meno’s beauty. By upholding geographical precision, we help the world recognize that Indonesia’s treasures are vast and diverse, each with its own unique history and governance.

Global Tourism Synergy
This international recognition proves that the community-based tourism model in Gili Meno has successfully captured the world’s imagination. The synergy between Bali’s global appeal and Lombok’s pristine natural charm is a powerful asset for Indonesia’s creative economy.

By maintaining accurate regional identity, we provide the right appreciation to the people of Lombok who have worked tirelessly to ensure Gili Meno remains a “preserved paradise” for generations to come.

The Gili Islands Near Bali Named Among the Best Places in the World to Swim

The Gili Islands, a trio of tropical islands near Bali, have been named among the best places in the world for sea swimming, based on international climate and ocean data. The ranking was produced by global villa specialist CV Villas, which analysed sea temperatures, wind speeds, cloud cover, and UV index levels to identify destinations with the most consistent year-round swimming conditions. In the global list, Gili Trawangan ranked at the top, making it one of the world’s leading sea-swimming destinations.

Why the Waters Around the Gili Islands Are So Special
The waters surrounding the Gili Islands are naturally protected by coral reefs, keeping waves gentle and visibility exceptionally clear. Warm sea temperatures and light winds throughout the year create ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and floating in tropical waters.

Travel Tips and Best Time to Visit
Among the three islands, Gili Meno is known as the most peaceful and untouched. The same warm, crystal-clear waters that earned Gili Trawangan global recognition also flow around the beaches of Gili Meno.

Car-Free Islands with a Relaxed Atmosphere
All three Gili Islands, Trawangan, Meno, and Air, are completely free of cars and motorbikes. Transport is limited to bicycles and traditional horse-drawn carts, creating a peaceful, clean, and environmentally friendly island environment.

With fewer visitors, quieter shores, and well-preserved coral reefs, Gili Meno offers a more tranquil swimming experience — often with sea turtles and tropical fish visible directly from the beach.

A World-Class Swimming Destination
The recognition of the Gili Islands as one of the world’s best swimming areas highlights the quality of their marine environment. And for travellers seeking calm and privacy, Gili Meno provides a quieter, more natural side of the same world-class paradise.

Gili Matra Targeted to Become a Waste-Free Marine Area by 2029

The North Lombok Regency Government (KLU), together with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), is targeting the areas of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air (Gili Matra) to become waste-free marine zones. This is in line with the central government’s target of making Indonesia’s seas free from waste by 2029.

Snorkeling Resort in Lombok Gili Meno

The KKP has a 2029 waste-free ocean program, which includes the management of waste originating from river mouths, small islands, coastal areas, ports, and marine activities. This is because the three Gili Islands are national conservation and tourism areas. The initial step taken is data mapping so that interventions and solutions can be implemented in a targeted manner.

As a form of concrete support, the KKP will provide incinerator equipment that has passed feasibility tests. With this equipment, waste in Gili Matra can be managed better and extreme accumulation will no longer occur.

Through this program, Gili Matra will be directed to become a zero-waste area with two main focuses: handling the accumulated old waste and managing the new waste that continues to be generated. Gili Matra will become an example that tourism and conservation can go hand in hand without neglecting environmental responsibility.

KEK Mandalika Crowned Best Integrated Tourism Destination 2025

Lombok Mandalika – As the morning light drapes the southern shores of Lombok, a refreshing piece of news spreads across the island: KEK Mandalika has officially been crowned the Best Integrated Tourism Destination 2025, awarded at the prestigious Bisnis Indonesia Award 2025.

For many travelers, Mandalika is known for its stunning beaches, the famous MotoGP circuit, and a coastline that blends nature and culture in harmony. But for us here on Gili Meno, this award feels like a breeze of good fortune sailing over from the mainland.

Mandalika is more than a tourism zone, it’s a gateway.

A gateway for travelers who, after exploring the hills of Seger or riding along Kuta Mandalika’s shores, often cross the sea to find peace on the Gili Islands. Some of them arrive at Gili Meno, seeking what our tiny island is best known for: silence, clear waters, and the company of gentle sea turtles.

This award confirms what we see every day: Lombok is rising as a global destination without losing its authenticity. Mandalika’s recognition will encourage more travelers to discover the smaller jewels nearby, including our quiet paradise, Gili Meno.

Lombok Ranked 2nd Best Island in Asia 2025 by Condé Nast Traveller

There is something magical about Lombok, something that lives beyond its beaches, mountains, and clear blue waters. It is a feeling, a rhythm, a peaceful heartbeat that makes travelers fall in love instantly.

That charm has now been recognized internationally. Lombok has officially been ranked the 2nd Best Island in Asia 2025 by Condé Nast Traveller, one of the world’s most respected travel magazines. The ranking comes from millions of real travelers who voted based on their personal experiences. Their message is clear: Lombok is not just beautiful, it’s unforgettable.

Here on Gili Meno, we hear this sentiment every day. Travelers often tell us that Lombok “feels like home.” They say it while watching sunsets turn the sky orange, while strolling along empty beaches, or while swimming with turtles in crystal-clear water.

This recognition also reinforces a truth we have always known: Lombok is not a “Bali alternative.” Lombok is its own identity. Its own story. Its own paradise.
